Kansas City Design Discovery is a one-week intensive studio-based program for students interested in the design professions of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Architecture and Planning. If you are considering undergraduate studies in the design professions, this is your opportunity to find out more about what design professionals do. You will learn the basics of design, start developing the skills needed for success and get the answers you are looking for about design education.

The studio is modeled like a college architectural design studio where students learn the basics of design through several introductory design projects. The design professor works on a one-to-one basis with students on individual projects. One day of the week will be spent visiting professional design offices and other important sites in the Kansas City area.

Kansas City Design Discovery will take place at the Kansas City Design Center located at 1018 Baltimore downtown Kansas City, Missouri. [map]

[when]

The program runs from Monday, June 4th to Friday, June 8th. The program will meet from 9:30 AM to 3:45 PM, Monday through Friday.

[who]

This course is for high school students or college students considering studies in architecture, landscape architecture, interior architecture, or for those students who have an interest in the designed environment and want an intensive introduction to the concepts of this engaging field. The program is open to high school students who have completed their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year by July 2012.

Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applications received after the May 31, 2012, deadline will be reviewed if space is still available.

Students are responsible for providing their own lunch during the program. Housing is not provided. Students are responsible for finding accommodations if necessary.

[faculty]

Matthew Knox, Associate Professor, Kansas State University, Department of Architecture.

Professor Knox has taught at Kansas State since 1990 where he teaches design studio, architectural computing, construction and theory courses. He has also often taught in Kansas State’s Study in Italy program. Professor Knox is a licensed architect and has worked for several leading architectural firms in Kansas City.

Design Discovery is offered through the Division of Continuing Education which may cancel or postpone any course or activity because of insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances. If a program is canceled or postponed, the Division of Continuing Education will refund registration fees but cannot be held responsible for other costs, charges, or expenses.
