In the recent past there were four parts to this page.  This second part is now its own page:

1... an introduction, with recommended indexes, dictionaries, and a caution on citation

2... a list of individual designers, artists and firms with references to web pages, books, and some journals, listed alphabetically by name... this list includes some architecture firms that I like (this is certainly an incomplete list);

3... a list of books that are compendiums or collections of works by various designers and firms, listed alphabetically by author's or editor's name, many with tables identifying contents; and

4... a list of several recent journals and books of interest, with a growing emphasis on the presentation of design ideas and professional practice through print/popular media..

p a r t 1.    Introduction

"Personal life, expression, understanding, and history advance obliquely and not straight toward ends or concepts.  What one deliberately seeks he does not find; and he who on the contrary has in his meditative life known how to tap its spontaneous source never lacks for ideas and values."

Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Indirect Language and the Voices of Silence.

. A few thoughts ...

The following lists identify selected readings and web pages for important landscape architects, artists, and designers, with an emphasis on current work and current practitioners.   To that end, the lists can help with finding materials for the seminar, or any course that incorporates theory and critical thinking into design activity.  I am especially interested in case studies of current work.   The lists will be expanded and modified as I become aware of other important sources in our literature (and find the time to update this web page).   Thanks in advance for your help with this effort.

Please note that this effort is not intended to replace the Avery Index as a guide to articles in the journals and periodicals of architecture and landscape architecture (see below).   Please note that this is not an effort to provide historical perspective, and to the end, I would encourage you to review the recent work of Charles Birnbaum, FASLA and Robin Karson, editors, Pioneers of American Landscape Architecture. It is well illustrated and in Weigel Library.  SB 469.9 .P56 2000.

Regarding Weigel Library, and especially its non-circulating reserve section, there are several very useful books there, including:

  • Baker H. Morrow's A Dictionary of Landscape Architecture ... SB 469.25 .M67 1987
  • Pierluigi Nicolin and Francesco Repishti, A Dictionary of Today's Landscape Designers ... SB 469.37.D53 2003

You will notice that many books of interest have call numbers near SB 470 ... please look around and find those in the TH 4700 range, also (this happens to be pools, but park structures are not far away...).  There are several areas in the stacks that serve our needs well.

A useful visual dictionary of architecture terms is at: http://ah.bfn.org/a/DCTNRY/vocab.html. A useful review of architectural styles can be found at: http://ah.bfn.org/a/archsty/index.html.

It goes without saying that the dedicated, knowledgeable staff of Weigel Library should be consulted during research efforts.  They are there to help you, and they enjoy the work.

Digital Imaging Project

Prof. Mary Ann Sullivan, who teaches art history at Bluffton College, has created a rich visual resource with her digital imaging project.  Her focus includes sculpture and architecture, broadly defined, over a very broad span of time.  See her work at: http://www.bluffton.edu/~sullivanm/index/index2.html

AVERY INDEX

Hale Library's digital library project CATnet has a database link, which is a way to get to the Avery Index (search under A). Click on "Avery Index" and you will be able to enter a designer's name or place name, for example, as a keyword in the search engine found there. Many of these journals are in Weigel Library.

ARCHITECTURAL INDEX

The Architectural Index is at the Reference Desk in Weigel Library, in corporeal form (bound copies, year by year) and is another excellent way into the periodicals.  Landscape Architecture Magazine (LA) is referenced regularly.   The Index has three general sections of great interest: Landscape Architecture: Landscape Design; Techniques; and Landscape Restoration.   There are particular sections that you can search for designers by name (under Architect or Designer, e. g. Kiley).  You can search by project type (e. g. University/Landscape or University/Plaza).  You can search by place (e. g. Kentucky/ Louisville/ City Park System Revised Plan by Andropogon, Associates; Original Design by FLO; June 98; LA ... or e. g. Kentucky/ Versailles; a horse farm designed by Morgan Wheelock; Sept. 98; LA).

Caution regarding citation: the citations to references on this page may or may not be in correct form.   I add entries frequently and quickly.  They are not to be relied upon for proper form.  Check with your instructors for the proper form of the citations that you use.

p a r t  2.  Designers /  Artists /  Firms

"In a context of rapid growth and change, such as in Mexico or other Latin American countries, where instant cities can grow overnight, the permanence and certitude of designed open space gives direction and form to the city, a projection of the future.  Urban open space -- the void -- is not the remnant of architecture but the spatial essence of the city, its form and its sense of being."

Mario Schjetnan, as quoted by John Beardsley in Ten Landscapes: Mario Schjetnan at p. 15.

Again, a good starting point for research, highly visual: Pierluigi Nicolin and Francesco Repishti, A Dictionary of Today's Landscape Designers. Skira... SB 469.37.D53 2003

The list in the second part is just a start; see also the Wikipedia entries for landscape architects.
