Introduction

This course will provide opportunities for returning students to present the internship experience to the landscape architecture faculty and fourth-year students preparing to find and engage an internship.  To achieve that end, the course will involve coordination with LAR 444 Internship Preparation at several points in the semester.

Key Linked Documents

Internship program guidance for requirements and the Employer Agreement Form (as PDFs) are linked to the LA/RCP department homepage, currently behind the Resources button; you can download those documents from there.

Students who want to find an internship (for example you are in LAR 444 and want to access the academic internship vacancy listing) should click on this link: current academic internship listings.

Employers who want to post an academic internship position vacancy should go to: contact internship form.

Summary Exhibition Boards

Copyright © Erin Hower 2005 All rights reserved.

Throughout the internship students are expected to collect a broad range of exemplary graphic and written material that will document various aspects of that experience.

Task. Each student will design, produce and submit a summary (image + text) board presenting this material.  This board will be exhibited in a gallery space during the fall semester after the internship.  It goes without saying that this board is to be original work by the student, not the firm.  See again the notice regarding academic honesty and plagiarism below.  Evaluation will be by the instructor of the course and the internship program director.

Due date. The due date for the summary exhibition board is October 8th at 4:30 PM.   You should notify the plot club people of your intent to plot a week or so before plotting so that they are aware of increased demand and can assure sufficient paper supply as the deadline approaches.  Please bring the final summary exhibition board to Lorn's office at or before the due date and time.   A digital copy in the KSOL drop box, and on CD is also expected; the CD to be properly named and titled.

Sponsor copy.  During the latest advisory board meeting, several employers expressed an interest in receiving a copy of the SEB and the faculty agreed that it would be easy and appropriate for students to send a digital copy once the "board" is complete, probably as a PDF... so please plan to do that when the time comes.   Many have done this in the past as a simple, sensible courtesy.

Internship Show. Please plan to help install the show on Saturday the 10th of October, and to remove the show on Saturday the 31st of October.  Leaders will need your help to install your boards and the ancillary materials (photos, sketches, studies, maps, etc.. ) that you may want to display.

Evaluation criteria are listed on the Evaluation Form.

Sponsor Profile Presentations

Task. During LAR 645, both the 28 week and 8-10 week internship students are required to prepare a 12 minute PowerPoint presentation about the Internship Sponsor.  The presentation will highlight the expertise and professional qualities of the office and its personnel.  The sponsor profile presentation should address how the projects and the office structure reflect the philosophy and mission of the office, as well as other issues (see the evaluation form noted below).

Evaluation. Evaluation will be informally by landscape architecture faculty and LAR 444 students.  Students in LAR 645 will be required to attend three days of presentations and are encouraged to engage in discussion with the presenters.  Students doing their presentations on the first day of presentations are invited to review preliminary versions of their PowerPoints with Lorn in order to get some feedback.  Others are welcome to do this also, as there will be little time on the presentation days for feedback. Some general thoughts about doing the presentations include:

* prepare thoroughly so you do not have to read the text of the slides (audiences can do that much quicker than you can speak the words, and there will be more engagement and better flow if you do not read the text) -- a quick glance should be all you need to know where you are and what you are talking about at that point;

* do not stare at the computer screen when delivering the talk... look at your audience, and directly at various people in turn (and as Robin has noted, smile at 'em... :)) ;

* dress appropriately (clean, neat) for a professional setting; we should practice this important element/behavior in school if it is not already well established; and

* be sure to project and vary the tone of your voice to keep attention and emphasize important points...

Be early. Please note that presenters must arrive early on the day of their presentation (9.22; 9.29; 10.06; 10.13 or 10.20) to insure that we get the PPTs loaded before the class start at 12:30, allowing the first speaker to begin at 12:30.  SPP files should be in the KSOL file drop box for the course (be sure to name and title them appropriately).

Please review the presentation criteria on the Evaluation Form.

Student Academic Creations

Student work may be retained for various departmental purposes, but student academic creations are subject to Kansas State University and Kansas Board of Regents (BOR) Intellectual Property Policies.  The BOR policy states: "The ownership of student works submitted in fulfillment of academic requirements shall be with the creator(s).  The student, by enrolling in the institution, gives the institution a non-exclusive royalty-free license to mark on, modify, retain the work as may be required by the process of instruction, or otherwise handle the work as set out in the institution's Intellectual Property Policy or in the course syllabus.  The institution shall not have the right to use work in any other manner without the written consent of the creator(s)." "Otherwise handle," as referenced in the BOR Intellectual Property Policy, includes display of student work in various media and use for accreditation purposes.

The Kansas State University Intellectual Property Policy can be found at: academic policies.
